What is Lactose Intolerance?
Lactose intolerance or lactose sensitivity is the inability to digest a sugar called lactose that’s found mainly in milk and dairy products. Our bodies use an enzyme called lactase that is produced in the small intestine to break down lactose into two simple sugars, glucose and galactose that can be absorbed into the bloodstream for proper digestion. However some people’s bodies don’t produce enough of this enzyme, leading to digestive discomfort. People can have varying degrees of lactose intolerance or sensitivity from mild to very uncomfortable side effects. You can learn more about lactose by visiting our Lactose 101 page.
What is the difference between a Dairy Allergy and Lactose Intolerance?
This can be confusing because some of symptoms can be the same. However there are vast differences between the two.
Lactose Intolerance is when the body has difficulty digesting the lactose sugar found in milk, leading to tummy discomfort or bloating but is not life-threatening. The amount of discomfort a person with lactose intolerance experiences varies from person to person.
A dairy allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts to milk proteins causing symptoms that range from mild (e.g. rashes or hives) to severe (e.g. trouble breathing and loss of consciousness). A dairy allergy can be life threatening.
It is best to talk with your doctor for personalized assistance around this topic.
